This cartridge box was made by the trade for sale to overseas customers, malitias and overseas colonial governments. It was not a W↑D approved item.
It was a simplified pattern of the official WD 1856 Pattern and ordered direct from the trade and not a War Office product and therefore not WD marked. Sold in large numbers to the confederacy. In general it was a well made product. VMA Cartridge Box is a generalisaton of the original concept as it varied between makers in small detail.
